I'm so delighted to say that I've been chosen to be the recipient of The Janapar Grant this year!
The Janapar Grant is run by Tom Allen (maker of the amazing cycling film Janapar and host of the blog Tom's Bike Trip) and is run to help one young person per year go on a solo, personally identified cycle tour, and write about it.
The recipient receives a purpose-built Oxford Bike Works touring bike, Panniers and other bags from Carradice, a survival kit from Porterlight Bicycles, and cycle touring clothing from Polaris Bikewear, as well as mentoring from seasoned world travellers.
I'm so honoured to be selected this year, as it's given me the push to FINALLY actually do what I've dreamed of doing for the last 7ish years - cycle around the world researching pilgrimage.
I've never been the sort to stay in one place for very long, and have come to see myself as a nomad, happiest on the road, in situations where just trying to get through the day, survive, find a place to stay are the most important issues.
I look forward to meeting my mentors, figuring out where I'll go and what I'll take, and the many challenges ahead.
I urge anyone who is thinking about getting out into the world by bike but needs a little (big!) push to apply for the grant next year.
